How much time do you spend thinking about the restaurant experience you've just had?

We book the table and then head in through the door.

Menu handed over - now this is a major irritation of mine as you're asked what you'd like to drink here even before you've chosen your food.

I blogged this a few months back and it's completely arse backwards and not just the UK!

I'd be keen to explore this when the full travel ban happens and maybe we (Er Indoors and me) can get down to Bordeaux - or actually anywhere where there's a holiday vibe and a vineyard close!!!

Anyway - back to my point about feedback!

As the lockdown and masks have started to / actually in most disappeared, we find ourselves becoming rather nostalgic! - meaning fed up of cooking at home and even the lockdown saviour of egg and chips (this wasn't part of the staple diet for too long - but I'ts parked for a bit!!! - odd wine pairing with this and I settled for a bootle of fizzy red which did the trick - the versatile Shiraz!!!)

Dining out - most weekends now and a day of bwydens cooked by someone else is essential!

We did a Sunday roast last weekend (mine was vegan pie) - the wine list came and went - no one was interested? - I asked for a recommendation and was told "no idea sorry!" .

Thats ok - i'm not bothered if anyone does'nt know what to have with a vegan pie and veggies with a veggie gravy - my choice would be a Syrah / Shiraz or a Bordeaux.

Now a Shiraz a bloody damn fine wine and its easy to drink - yes you just tilt the glass, but the important bit is what comes out of it!

But to pair with a dinner and trimmings - yup!!! - and while I type this I googled the various options and pairing sites and stacks of options - a few contradictory ones, so I pasted the one I agree with the most below!

So feedback - I feedback to the young lady who served us the bwydens - "if anyone asks what the best red wine is for the dinner - say a shiraz!"

Prompting her to bring over a menu with the wine list on it - no shiraz!

She sighed and walked off!

Simple rule of thumb -

  • Chicken - a good bold white - chardonnay

  • Lamb - nice and light and needs a delicate balance and id opt for a pinot nor (if I still eat meat that is!)

  • Beef - shiraz every time or an unblended Malbec (but the shiraz would topple any thick tasty gravy and compliment the hell out of the food!)

  • Vegan pie and veggies with immense veggie gravy - shiraz.

Feedback to the restaurant and social media the pairing.

Use the link below to help - but enjoy the bwydens and pair wisely!
